Since nearly two decades, June has been considered a month to highlight diversity. As the first month of summer, the weather becomes ideal for parades of any kind. It has been chosen several times as the month to celebrate LGTB Pride, having a special day for the parade but supporting sexual diversity along the month. As always, Instagram participates of this. How? Or, more specifically, who?
The answer is Miley Cyrus. The well-known singer actress has launched a campaign under the #InstaPride hashtag, which aims to make people aware and accepting of a specific sector of the LGTB community – transgender people. Along the following days she will share twelve stories about transgender people with her followers.
In front of a cheerful yellow background, her fist firmly grasping a bunch of yellow balloons, Cyrus then told her followers the story of Leo (@isupersheng), a transgender man, 19, who has “a lot of different identities. I’m a writer, a filmmaker in the works…, a Gleek, a feminist, an activist… As for my gender, I identify as a trans man.”
Moreover, a second person, now an agender, biracial 24 y.o. called Tyler (@tywrent), who spent years trying to figure out why they had to fit into one of only two genders. “It took years for me to find words for my gender identity, and to feel comfortable expressing myself as I am.”
It isn’t surprising that Cyrus supports LGTB people. She has recently come out as bisexual, although she had told her mother when she was 14.
Cyrus has been on the spotlight recently, as last week she starred a campaign to promote the Happy Hippie foundation, which fights for different rights around the world. Many celebrities have worked together with Cyrus for this foundation, including Alanis Morisette, Joan Jett, Russell Simmons…
